Sidewalk Gaps

06/17/2013 – 12/31/2019

By 2019, 20% of all sidewalk gaps selected from the Transportation Committee inventory and approved by City Council will be built according to the then current code requirements

Description

The purpose of this strategic result is to fill in missing sections of sidewalk throughout the City in an effort to encourage walking and access to schools and other pedestrian destinations.

Safe Routes to School and sidewalk gaps – Utilizing new computer based and aerial imaging technology Public Works discovered additional sidewalk gaps of approximately 29 miles near elementary schools.   Staff will explore area beyond the schools and establish a more comprehensive analysis.  At approximately $1,000,000 per mile it will cost $29 million to close all gaps around schools.

Because of a lack of funding, there has been no additional progress made with this strategic result.

Significance

Pedestrian mobility is greatly improved when sidewalks are in place. The ability to access sidewalks also encourages alternate travel modes. The initial focus of work will be to address sidewalk gaps along school walking routes and to G Line stations.
